Mazunte is a Magical Town located in the southernmost part of Mexico. It is renowned for its beautiful beaches and coastline, delicious cuisine, and enchanting natural spaces. Today, I will share how you can get to Mazunte.
Take to consideration that the main entrance to mazunte is through SAN ANTONIO Gas station, So every road with lead you there. you can also get through the back road entering through Puerto Angel, but is more messy.
How to Get to Mazunte From Anywhere (Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca):
How to Get to Mazunte from Huatulco:
Public Transportation - 1.2 hours
Option 1: By Van/Shared Taxi
Go to the shared van terminal in Santa Cruz Huatulco.
Take a van heading to Pochutla. The trip takes approximately 1 hour.
Once in Pochutla, take a shared taxi or van to Mazunte (around 25 minutes).
Option 2: By Bus
In Huatulco, head to the OCC bus terminal.
Take a bus going to Pochutla (about 1 hour).
From Pochutla, take a shared taxi or van to Mazunte.
By Car - 50 min.
Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour.
Start from Huatulco:
Depart from the center of Huatulco or Bahías de Santa Cruz.
Take the road toward Federal Highway 200, heading in the direction of Pochutla and Puerto Escondido.
Take Federal Highway 200:
Drive west along Federal Highway 200 toward Puerto Escondido. This is a well-paved and relatively straight highway compared to other mountain routes in the region.
Continue Toward San Antonio:
After about 40 minutes, you will pass through the town of San Antonio. Shortly after, you’ll see a sign pointing to a left turn toward Mazunte.
Take the Turn to Mazunte:
Turn onto the local road toward Mazunte. Follow it for about 10–15 minutes. The road is narrower and may have some curves, but it’s in good condition.
This road will take you directly to Mazunte.
From Puerto Escondido:
By Public Transportation- 1 hour
Go to Federal Highway 200 in Puerto Escondido and take a bus or shared taxi heading to Pochutla. The journey takes about 50 min.
In Pochutla, transfer to a shared taxi or van that will get you to Mazunte in around 25 minutes. Or get down in the San Anotnio Gas station before Pochutla, and directly take a shared bus to the downtown.
By Car - 45 min.
Take Federal Highway 200 heading toward Huatulco from Puerto Escondido.
After about 50 minutes, you’ll pass through San Antonio.
Look for the Mazunte sign and turn right onto the local road. Follow it for 10–15 minutes until you arrive.
From Oaxaca City
Public Transportation - 8 hours
Option 1:
The most direct route is to take the "Unidas" bus line, which departs from downtown Oaxaca and goes to Zipolite, with a stop in the Magical Town of Mazunte.
Option 2:
Head to the ADO/OCC bus terminal in Oaxaca City.
Take an overnight bus to Pochutla (duration: 8–10 hours).
Once in Pochutla, take a shared taxi or van to Mazunte (about 25 minutes).
Option 3: By Van/Shared Taxi
In Oaxaca City, look for van or shared taxi services that go directly to the coast.
Several companies offer transportation to Pochutla, with a travel time of approximately 6–7 hours.
From Pochutla, take a shared taxi or van to Mazunte.
By Car (6–7 hours):
Leave Oaxaca Toward Highway 175:
From downtown Oaxaca, take Federal Highway 175 south toward San Bartolo Coyotepec.
Follow signs for Ejutla de Crespo and Puerto Ángel.
Climb the Sierra Madre del Sur:
Highway 175 is winding and passes through the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur. You’ll go through small towns like San José del Pacífico, known for its cloud forests and stunning views.
The road is full of curves, so drive cautiously, especially if you're not used to mountain roads.
Descend Toward Pochutla:
After descending the mountains, you’ll arrive in the town of Pochutla.
From Pochutla, follow the signs for Federal Coastal Highway 200 heading west (toward Puerto Escondido).
Turn Off Toward Mazunte:
Drive along Highway 200 for approximately 15–20 minutes.
After passing the town of San Antonio and its gas station, you’ll see a sign for a left turn to Mazunte. Take this turn and follow the road to your destination.
Considerations:
Scenic but Winding Route: Highway 175 offers beautiful views but is very winding, particularly in the mountain sections. It’s best to make the trip during daylight hours.
Fuel Stops: There are gas stations in major towns along the route (Oaxaca, Miahuatlán, Pochutla), but few in the mountains, so start with a full tank.
Carry Cash: Small towns along the way may not accept cards, so it’s wise to have cash on hand.
